"Americans, more than any other culture on earth, are cookbook cooks; we learn to make our meals not from any oral tradition, but from a text. The just-wed cook brings to the new household no carefully copied collection of the family's cherished recipes, but a spanking new edition of ‘Fannie Farmer’ or ‘The Joy of Cooking’." |

Place egg whites and sugar in large bowl, and on low speed of electric
mixer, beat together until sugar is moistened. Increase speed to
high; beat until glossy and stiff peaks forms when beaters are
lifted, about 5 minutes. If icing is too thick for decorating, beat
in few drops of water. Food colouring may be added at this point. If
not using right away, store at room temperature up to three days in
airtight container.
