There are three possible parts to a date, of which at least two must be offered: entertainment, food, and affection. It is customary to begin a series of dates with a great deal of entertainment, a moderate amount of food, and the merest suggestion of affection. As the amount of affection increases, the entertainment can be reduced proportionately. When the affection IS the entertainment, we no longer call it dating. “This root [the potato], no matter how much you prepare it, is tasteless and floury. It cannot pass for an agreeable food, but it supplies a food sufficiently abundant and sufficiently healthy for men who ask only to sustain themselves. 1. Combine the sugar and cornstarch in a saucepan. Slowly add the cold
water and mix well. Bring mixture to a boil, then add butter, lemon
juice and grated lemon peel. 2. Continue to boil slowly until the
sauce is thick and opaque. This will take about 10 minutes. Cool,
chill if desired, and serve over your choice of desserts.
Yield: 3-1/2 cups of sauce.
